2024 Hatch Show Print Visiting Artists John Hancock And Carlos Hernandez
In 2019, Houston-based printmaker and designer Carlos Hernandez participated in Hatch Show Print’s Visiting Artist program. At the end of the experience, recognizing that there might be more to explore, we set a date to reconvene in the shop and see what happens. To up the ante, we set a theme and added another artist to the roster.
Fellow Outlaw Printmaker John Hancock, also widely recognized as one half of The Amazing Hancock Brothers, accepted the challenge, curious how his printmaking background in woodcuts and screen printing, would come together with type and the other relief printing blocks the shop uses in its day-to-day operation.
The theme is summed up in the resulting exhibition’s title:
Movies & Mayhem by Madmen
Inspired Sin-arama by Carlos Hernandez & John Hancock.
Movie posters advertising horror films, westerns, film-noir, musicals, comedies and morality tales were created and printed at Hatch Show Print from around the 1930s into the late twentieth century – the shop has even created ‘prop’ posters to appear in movies in more recent years.
Carlos and John planted this seed of shop history and out of it grew an array of prints and collages that blend their styles with the textures and typography that come from Hatch Show Print. Aided by designer-printers Nick Larson and Sarah Budeski, John incorporated words and very short stories into a series of letterpress prints, and Carlos layered color upon color in both letterpress prints and collages. And more: Carlos and John collaborated on a screenprint that was made complete with an array of typographical treatments that only could come from the typecases at Hatch Show Print.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Thursday, September 26, from 5-8 pm, or drop in to Haley Gallery during the run of the show to view the work.
