Pour Your Heart Out!

January 26, 2018

As winter set in we prepared for the season of indoor activities . . . and for us, that meant printing a bunch of new stationery perfect for warming hearts!

Valentine's Day

You can stop by the retail shop in person to pick your favorites, along with oversized valentines (some people call them posters), or chocolate, or shop our online store.

Spending all this time on stationery is as close as we get to the small ephemera the shop used to print. Waaay back in the last century, even though Hatch Show Print was already well established as a show poster and billboard advertising shop, it continued to offer small-format print services too. It did make good business sense to accommodate our customers’ needs for business cards, letterhead, tickets, and coupons, as oftentimes they were the very same clients who were already ordering posters or billboard advertisements to paste up.

Historic business cards

Evident in these examples, these jobs were straightforward, consistently organized, and typeset for efficient production, and printed mainly with black ink. From this vantage point in the twenty-first century, these particular cards and bits of small ephemera offer a glimpse into the occupational trends in mid-twentieth century Nashville, as well as the types of activities the community pursued in its leisure time. We noticed how many women offered sewing services, the catchy name of the pest control company, and appropriately enough, a wedding photographer who ordered a photo to be printed on his business card.

Tickets

The variety of live entertainment was just as strong around World War II as it is today, though spaghetti dinners appear to have been more popular then than pancake breakfasts are today.
