Cold Weather Advisory: Let’s Celebrate the City When It’s All Ours

Jan 26, 2018

We look forward to January and February each year, when we can regroup, reorganize, and enjoy all this city has to offer, nearly visitor-free. Here on Fifth Avenue South, the first two weekends of February are chock full of chances to get inky and take in some of the art made in Nashville.

February 3, 6:00 – 9:00 pm: First Saturday Art Crawl All of the galleries on the west side of the Cumberland River stay open late, welcoming visitors with grown-up refreshment. Hatch Show Print’s Haley Gallery will feature iconic advertising art of the last century, with a variety of historic restrikes printed from the original wood blocks that were designed and carved in the shop. From ‘punctureless’ hosiery to the billboard artwork advertising the stars of the Grand Ole Opry, the range of subjects is as varied as the commercial needs of a growing city in the heart of the country. Feminine Beauty was recently rediscovered in the shelves of blocks, and research thus far hints at its use to promote Billroy’s Comedians, a popular variety show that was active from 1924 through the early 1950s.

The shop’s magical walls of type and blocks contain hand-carved blocks of both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, two birthdays we celebrate this month — and in time for this month’s show, we’ve printed Abraham Lincoln in a printer-ly test color pattern.

February 3, 6:00-8:00 pm: Block Party Running concurrently with First Saturday Art Crawl, grown-ups have the opportunity to get inky in our monthly Block Party. Join us from 6 to 8 pm in the Universal Music Group Hatch Show Print Space for Design, where our instructors will guide you to fun and success working with a selection of the very same hand-carved image blocks the designers use during the week to make show and event posters. No previous experience is necessary, and you will have plenty of time to get the hang of ink on paper and fabric. Slots are very limited for this experience. To register, visit our website.

February 4, Letterpress Family Program The weekend of free-flowing ink concludes on Sunday with our Family Program, where kids and accompanying adults can gets hands-on with a selection of carved wood, linoleum, and metal image blocks from the Hatch collection. Three 45-minute sessions allow for a lot of creativity to make its way onto paper, and the instructors usually have an additional surprise or two to make this monthly program a unique experience each time. This activity is first-come, first-served, and more information about the start times can be found in our Activities section

February 9 and 10, 9:30 – 11:30 am Inky Hearts Drop-In Activity Start the day in the Universal Music Group Hatch Show Print Space for Design to spread a little love with ink and paper crafts. Our instructors will guide attendees big and small through the process of hand-printing with blocks from our collection of hand-carved imagery, and participants can take it from there, to create a one-of-a-kind valentine! If you’re able to take advantage of visiting us during this time, you’re in for a treat. See you soon! And, any time you’re escaping a snowmageddon back home, you can round out the day with a Hatch Show Print Tour.
