ABOUT THE ARTIST

Judith Poirier (MA Royal College of Art, London) lives and works in Montreal. She is a professor at the School of design, Université du Québec à Montréal, as well as an experimental filmmaker, book designer, and letterpress practitioner. Her work centers on the use of typography and abstraction, and through this exploration she has developed an animation technique that employs an aleatoric approach to letterpress printing and sound production. Poirier's films have been screened and recognized at numerous international festivals, most recently her film Setting West received an Honorable Mention at the Nashville Film Festival.

Poirier also recently directed La chose imprimée, a four-year research/creation project investigating the book as a space for design experimentation. Her books have been recognized by the Type Directors Club and the Alcuin Society for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, and shortlisted at the Leipzig “Best Books from all over the World” competition.
